MOVIESinMO Review
She was boring in Proud Mary. Then she was over-the-top crazy in Acrimony. Now, Taraji P. Henson is reading men’s minds and it’s the best things she’s done in a long time. Ms. Henson is not an actress that appeals to the average White audience, therefore, her movies are normally rated very low on most websites. But this is not most websites and we are not White. Has she made some bad movies? Of course, but this ain’t one of them. What Men Want is a funny, raunchy, Black female version of Mel Gibson’s movie, What Women Want AND it’s better. I purposely posted this review a few days late so I could read what the other (White) critics had to say.
IMDB – 2.9/10 Rotten Tomatoes – 47% Metacritic – 50%
Now is the time to hear from the people that matter. What Men Want is a great movie with a predominantly Black cast and Taraji P. Henson is great in it. This movie starts off funny within the first ten minutes and stays there. Along the way, it develops heart and meaning underneath the stereotype and foul-mouthed script. Honestly, we need more remakes with an African American cast WITH dialog that’s relatable to today’s issues. As for this movie, where are the reviews from the Black critics? The REAL black critics, not the ones trying to fit in with their White counterpart. According to study.com, to become a film critic you need to become a film buff, get a Bachelor’s Degree, get an entry-level job, and build your reputation. All this for about $70,000 a year, assuming you also write and sell books. Problem 1 – why do you need a degree of any sort to know if you like a movie? Problem 2 – If I obtained a Bachelor’s Degree, I am not starting any job at ground level. Problem 3 – The industry is over-run with White critics, so trying to fit in and gain a reputation means to act like them and if you do that, you’re defeating the purpose of being a real Black film critic. Once you go to school for film, you lose sight of what real people (Black or White) like. Once you go to school, you stop being a person enjoying a film and become a student looking for production mistakes. In short, if you want real reviews from real people, get them from sites like MoviesInMo.com, BlackCriticGuy(YouTube), and 3BlackChics.com. These sites can be hard to find since they’re not one of those owned by a multi-million dollar company.
