WHAT’S IT ABOUT
After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, PROMETHEUS) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure that will “upgrade” his body. The cure – an Artificial Intelligence implant called STEM – gives Grey physical abilities beyond anything experienced and the ability to relentlessly claim vengeance against those who murdered his wife and left him for dead.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW
I love Blumhouse Productions. For a company that began with Paranormal Activity and Insidious, they have really amped up the horror and sci-fi genre. Upgrade is a movie filled with a mixture of future tech and old-school ideas. As you know from the trailers, the main character, Grey Trace and his wife, get an apparent robbery. Grey’s wife dies, and he becomes a paraplegic. A guy from a tech company presents Grey with a solution to his mobility problem by offering to put a “chip” in his spine so that he may walk again. After the experimental procedure, he does what so many of us wish we could do – avenge the death of a loved one. The concept is not new, but the way it gets done is astonishing.

Everything from the way he starts walking again, to the way he hunts down the ones responsible for killing his wife is so visually stunning it made me want to get a chip put in my spine. Upgrade is a well-paced movie with a plot and characters you really care about. Also, the interaction between Grey and STEM (the computer chip implant) is priceless. If only I could have a conversation with Alexa on that same level. Later, you find out what everyone whos involved real intentions are, and this starts to change the entire dynamic of the movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone, especially anyone that loves futuristic action films. Upgrade is a definite must-see. This film is rated “R” for intense violence and cursing.
