WHAT’S IT ABOUT

After the vicious slaughter of his family by stone-cold mercenary Sub-Zero, Hanzo Hasashi is exiled to the torturous Netherrealm. There, in exchange for his servitude to the sinister Quan Chi, he’s given a chance to avenge his family – and is resurrected as Scorpion, a lost soul bent on revenge. Back on Earthrealm, Lord Raiden gathers a team of elite warriors – Shaolin monk Liu Kang, Special Forces officer Sonya Blade, and action star Johnny Cage – an unlikely band of heroes with one chance to save humanity. To do this, they must defeat Shang Tsung’s horde of Outworld gladiators and reign over the Mortal Kombat tournament.

If you are going to make a Mortal Kombat movie – this is how you do it. From the opening scene until the end, this film oozes Mortal Kombat. With over 90 characters in the game, any of them could have made an exciting origin story. I’m personally glad they chose Scorpion. Unlike the previous Kombat films, this one focused on a character not too many people knew the backstory of. Not to mention, he’s a lot more interesting. Especially if you knew Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpion) wasn’t a bad person but a father and husband out for revenge after his people, including his wife and son, were slaughtered. The visuals alone make this movie leaps and bounds better than its predecessors. So watching all of the very violent fights was to be expected. The film is called Scorpion’s Revenge, but the writers made sure to highlight as many aspects of the game as sensibly possible. Other than the obvious main fighter, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang are highlighted as well. Throughout the film, several characters show off their signature moves while others are used as punching bags as a way to reveal their origin or give them a reason for their actions in future films. There’s not much to be said about this film without giving away spoilers, and the only negative aspect is the length. At only 80 minutes, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge leaves you wanting a lot more. Warner Brothers definitely have a franchise hit worth at least three sequels.
