WHAT’S IT ABOUT

When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.

At first glance, you might think this is a cheap Clue (1985) ripoff, and based on the trailer, it would seem like it is, but you would be wrong. Knives Out is so much more. Everything Clue did, Knives Out does it better. From the people accused to the detective accusing them, this is a very well thought out movie with characters that have depth. Even after the audience discovers what really took place, we have the pleasure of watching Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) go through the motions to figure out what happened. As the film progresses, you find out there’s more to the story, and like all murder mysteries, everybody has motive. From the daughter to the daughter-in-law, this story has more twists and turn than any other whodunit in the last ten years. Key points would be the overall style of the film, incuding the house with all the mystique of a Scooby-Doo mansion. It appears to be something straight out of the sixties by the way they act and their mannerisms. The overall eccentric behavior and the detective’s country accent is the icing on this murder mystery cake. Knives Out never gets boring and never takes itself to serious. What it does is give the audience just enough information to feel like junior sleuths without dumbing down the plot. By the end of the movie, there’s a definite feeling of satisfaction after the whole story is revealed. If you love detective Knives Out should be on your must-watch list.
