WHAT’S IT ABOUT
On Halloween night, three young women and their respective boyfriends head to Hell Fest — a ghoulish traveling carnival that features a labyrinth of rides, games, and mazes. They soon face a bloody night of terror when a masked serial killer turns the horror theme park into his own personal playground.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Apparently, there’s nothing new in horror films so, I guess it’s time to start over. That’s right, let’s take everything we know about this genre and cram the most stereotypical ideas into a 90-minute throwback. Hell Fest is the movie the studios made for the twentysomethings because that group of people has never seen a bunch of young adults at an event getting killed by a man in a mask. I can only speculate what the meeting had to sound like to get this movie produced. Is Hell Fest a good movie – HELL NO. Is it worth seeing – sure. There are plenty of jump scenes to keep you at the edge of your seat, and a few new touches added that is rare in horror films. The usual stupid acts found in most thrillers are, of course, in almost every scene of Hell Fest. This is the main problem. Hell Fest is about three couples having fun at a famous traveling carnival – no problem. They’re all given V.I.P. passes by Gavin, a park employee, AND Natalie’s (the main character) date – still no problem. Once in the park, they make a plan on what rides/attractions to go on first and begin their scary fun – normal stuff. After the very first “house” an issue invokes questions of authenticity and is ultimately passed off as park theatrics – now the fun starts. From here, people start dying and surprise, it goes unnoticed – stupid stuff begins. As for the suspense, there’s no shortage, and as I mentioned earlier, it’s practically one jump scene after the next. Our group of couples seems to be the only ones the killer is after, and by horror movie standards, that’s a 10 on the dumb scale. The events in the film are scary and create genuine fear within the audience as long as you don’t think about it too hard. That is the model for almost any horror movie and most films in general – don‘t over think it, and like most movies lately, stay and see the post-credit scene. Last note, don’t pay premium for this film. If you want to see it, go early, wait to see it at the discount theater, or wait for Redbox.
