After moving to a new city, young Andy Barclay receives a special present from his mother — a seemingly innocent Buddi doll that becomes his best friend. When the doll suddenly takes on a life of its own, Andy unites with other neighborhood children to stop the sinister toy from wreaking bloody havoc.

Finally, a horror remake that does justice to the original. In 1988, a sentient killer doll seemed like a crazy idea considering other movies with the same premise were either bad, cheesy, or both. Child’s Play (1988) was not another Trilogy of Terror (1975). It was a new concept that became so popular they made six sequels and compared it to other top horror villains like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. Now it’s 2019, and this generations Child’s Play consists of everything we sometimes fear would happen, the rise of the machines, soft of. This time the Buddi doll isn’t possessed by a maniac killer, it’s the handy work of faulty electronics. So no need for voodoo spells and the fear of body swapping. This time a defected Buddi doll is returned for a refund and instead of shipping it back to the factory, store employee Karen decided to give it to her 13-year-old son Andy as a gift. Once Andy saw what it was, he was disappointed, but after turning it on and realizing the dolls defect allowed it to do things a doll should not be able to do, Andy’s whole demeanor towards the Buddi doll changed. Andy also named the doll but Buddi misunderstood and named himself Chucky. Andy later gained new friends because of his uninhibited doll and this is when things turned ugly. Since this particular doll is faulty, when Chucky says “friends ‘till the end” he means it. Chucky was always by Andy’s side and because it was a “learning” toy, it copied everything it was exposed to just to make Andy happy. The times when Chucky mimics his surroundings are the best parts of the movie but they take too long to get to the point. This hesitation makes the payoff a bit weak or predictable. Child’s Play (2018) had great potential but wasted too much time setting up the kills. Hopefully, they fix that issue if they decide to make Child’s Play 2.
