WHAT’S IT ABOUT

When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth. But the trio of friends will have to stay one step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.

For what it’s worth, it was nearly impossible for this film to fail. Abominable takes a story that has been told many times by many different studios, changed the character names and appearances, and gave it a new visual appeal. In short, they used the standard “learn your lesson” template. First, there’s a monster that’s being chased by an obsessive hunter with one life mission – to have the rarest of everything. Next, the saviors. That would be the people willing to do whatever it takes to save our monster friend and get him home. In Abominable, those people are three Asian kids. They include Jin, an over-the-top, socially obsessed boy, and Peng, his younger brother, and a girl named Yi, the main character with family issues. Once the creature is discovered by Yi, she learns of its friendly nature, finds out it is a Yeti, and names him Everest. At this point, the story begins to take many turns and alterations within itself. More is learned about each person, the good guys, and bad guys, as the movie progresses. Somewhere in the middle, the focus is more about the three kids than Everest, and eventually, it’s all about Yi. This movie has tons of heart and teaches valuable family lessons without being preachy. In addition to the life lessons, the gorgeous scenery, and the discoveries of self, Abominable has some laughable moments, both visual and verbal. In the end, this is an excellent must-see film made for everyone.
