What’s It About
Taking low-budget, knock-off filmmaking to new, shameless depths, 2005’s King of the Lost World is actually of a rip-off of two movies. As the film’s cover art plainly spells out, this is supposedly the story that inspired both King Kong and Jurassic Park. The King Kong imitation is pretty obvious, but the Jurassic Park element is a bit more spurious – it’s basically a retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, which has the same name as a Jurassic Park sequel. You could maybe argue that Doyle’s work inspired the blockbuster dinosaur franchise, but it’s a stretch. The film tells the tale of a plane that crashes in a remote jungle, where its survivors are greeted by prehistoric and mythological creatures. There are giant spiders, giant scorpions, something that might be a dinosaur, and of course, a massive, hulking ape.
