Villains – SEPTEMBER 20th, 2019
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Mickey and Jules are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Villains is a surprisingly good dark comedy about two amateur thieves, Mickey and Jules, with goals bigger than their skill set. Right from the beginning you notice something is a little off between these two as they fumble their way through what should have been a straightforward gas station robbery. They get away with the money, and you would have thought they stole a million dollars by their reaction, but it’s pocket change considering what they plan to do with it. A mile or so down the road, they ran out of gas (how ironic), and their level of expertise shines once more. At this point they spot a house with a car in the garage. The plan was to break in the house, find the car keys, and leave. You know from the trailer, that is not what happens. Mickey and Jules become the hostages (more irony) of the homeowners George and Gloria. This is when the direction of the film starts to turn, and the focus is more on the homeowners. Villains has moments like this throughout the movie, and as a spectator, I’m at a loss for who to cheer for. The lines between good and evil are blurred, reversed, and redefined by the end of the film. With all of its quirkiness, the mere oddities within Villains make this movie something worth seeing at least once.
