Doctor Sleep – NOVEMBER 8th, 2019
WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Struggling with alcoholism, Dan Torrance remains traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. His hope for a peaceful existence soon becomes shattered when he meets Abra, a teen who shares his extrasensory gift of the “shine.” Together, they form an unlikely alliance to battle the True Knot, a cult whose members try to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Long, boring, and should have stayed a book. There’s so much this movie needed to explain for any of it to make sense, it’s not worth sitting through the two and a half-hour film. The beginning of the film will bring back feelings of nostalgia for those who have seen The Shinning, but once that feeling passes, you’re left with a mess of a movie. Doctor Sleep is loaded with tons of characters that are used as time fillers and story distractions, considering there’s only a handful of actors in this movie that really matters, and even they don’t help the story. The main protagonist, Dan, is useless. He is the little boy seen in The Shining, now an adult with tons of issues. He meets a teen named Abra. She has extream powers that allow her to do things no one thought was possible. Then there are the bad guys, True Knot. They are beings that live off of the “shine” they get from other people with unique abilities. This also means there are more stories to explain and why the only good parts of this film happen after the two-hour mark. That leaves 30-minutes to make Doctor Sleep the movie it should have been two-hours earlier. The main thing wrong with this movie is the overabundance of story. It works perfectly for a book, but for a film, there’s too much that needs to be explained before you can have an exciting movie. As I stated earlier, the last 30-minutes is when the film finally “shines.” Overall, great book, decent film, go see it if you have some expendable cash or nothing better to watch.
