WHAT’S IT ABOUT
Migo is a friendly Yeti whose world gets turned upside down when he discovers something that he didn’t know existed — a human. He soon faces banishment from his snowy home when the rest of the villagers refuse to believe his fantastic tale. Hoping to prove them wrong, Migo embarks on an epic journey to find the mysterious creature that can put him back in good graces with his simple community.

MOVIESinMO REVIEW
Before I start, I would like to mention that I had no idea this movie was partially a musical, so when at about ten minutes the main Yeti Migo (Channing Tatum), starts singing, I was completely unprepared. The singing didn’t make the movie any better or worse, it was just unexpected. As for the film, it has its moments.
Migo is one of the happily oblivious Yeti that live at the top of a mountain hidden by clouds. He and the rest of his people religiously follow the teachings of the Stonekeeper (Common). Whatever is, was, and will be, is (literally) written in stone. The Yeti live “perfect” lives, and everyone does their part to ensure their village runs smoothly. Migi’s father, Dorgle (Danny DeVito) is the village gong ringer. According to the stones, the gong must be rung every morning to awaken the light snail (the sun) and the village. Once all is explained, and everyone is met, Migi has a mishap practicing to ring the gong. This is where he sees a Smallfoot for the first time. As he tries to convince his people of what he has seen, Stonekeeper says otherwise because the stones say Smallfoots do not exist, and if the stones say it, it must be true. If Migi says he saw a Smallfoot, then the stones are wrong and if one stone this creates the validity of the other stones and the Yeti entire way of life.
As you know from the trailers, Migi was banished. From here we meet the S.E.S. (Smallfoot Evidentiary Society). With their assistance, Migi is able to “enter” the Smallfoots world and ultimately find a Smallfoot. Once Migi and the Smallfoot realize they need to find a way other than vocally to communicate, hand signals, facial expressions and trust become vital. Throughout this film, there are loads of teachable moments filled with moral dilemmas and life lessons for kids and adults such as:
-
Don’t suppress your feelings.
-
Always tell the truth no matter who you think it hurts
-
Listen to your children.
-
Don’t hide the truth
-
Having questions is good for all of us
-
Don’t let the past, good or bad, dictate the future.
-
Don’t prejudge because this hinders true learning
-
For your own good is rarely for your own good
Overall, I enjoyed Smallfoot and look forward to a sequel.
